A website your own team can change
Sites drift out of date when every edit means going back to whoever built them. Website design and development with Traittek can include a content model and a CMS, so your own team can change the words without booking developer time.
- Scope can include
- Corporate sites, web applications, landing pages, redesigns
- Starting point
- What it must say, and who updates it
- You own
- The domain, hosting account, code and repository
- Search engines
- Crawlable build intended. No ranking promised.
- Not included
- Copywriting, paid media, ongoing server operations
What it solves
The situations this is for
Only a developer can edit the site
Services change and staff change, but the pages do not, because every correction needs a release. The site slowly stops describing the actual business.
A redesign that only changed the paint
New colors and new type sit on the same templates and the same content structure. Nothing underneath moved, so the next change is as awkward as the last one.
The site cannot reach your other systems
Enquiries, quotes, bookings and customer records live somewhere else. With no integration, staff retype the same details by hand, and the website becomes a dead end.
Search engines can barely read the site
No server-rendered markup, unreadable URLs, missing titles, broken redirects: a crawler is given very little to read. That is a construction problem before it is a marketing one.
Scope
What the scope can include
Design
- UI and UX design
- Responsive layouts, phone through desktop
- Reusable templates instead of one-off page designs
- Accessible markup, keyboard behavior and focus states
Build
- Front-end and web application development
- CMS selection, setup and content modeling
- Logged-in areas and customer portals
- Landing pages
- API integrations with systems you already run
Launch and upkeep
- Hosting setup and deployment
- Crawlable markup, metadata, sitemaps and redirect maps
- Performance optimization
- Maintenance of the site's own code and content
- Redesign and migration of an existing site
Scenarios
What this could look like
A corporate site nobody inside can edit
A scenario this covers: the service list has grown, the team page is wrong, and both fixes wait on an outside developer. Work would start with a new content model, then a CMS your team can use, then templates rebuilt around both.
An application behind the marketing site
For example, a quoting tool, a client portal or a document upload has to sit on the same domain and read as the same company. Scope would cover the application and the link to whatever system holds the data.
One page for one announcement
For example, a business needs one page for one announcement. It would explain one thing, work on a phone first, and pass its form submissions to the system that already handles enquiries.
Method
How we would work
A starting point for the first conversation, not a fixed methodology.
- 01
Start with what the site says
We would ask what the site must state, and who has to keep it accurate. That answer sets the content model, and the content model sets the templates.
- 02
Name the integrations before design
Anything the site sends or fetches would be identified first. A page that talks to another system is a different build from a static one, and finding that out late is expensive.
- 03
Review in a browser, not pictures
Sign-off could happen on a working staging site rather than flat images. You would approve real behavior at each screen size and in each state.
- 04
Agree who maintains it before launch
The domain and hosting account would be in your name. Updates and editing access can sit with your team, with us, or be split. We would write that down rather than leave it unassigned at handover.
Fit
Is this the right fit?
A good fit if
- Every correction to your site waits on an outside developer.
- Enquiries, quotes or bookings get retyped from the site into another system.
- You need a portal or web application on the same domain as your site.
- You want the domain, the hosting account and the code in your own name.
Not the right fit
You want to rank for particular search terms
Buy search marketing for that, not a website build. What this covers is keeping the build out of a crawler's way: clean markup, sane URLs, correct redirects. It does not include keyword research, content production or link building, and no one here can tell you where you would appear in results.
A few pages you never want to think about
With no integrations and nobody on staff who wants to manage a website, a hosted builder such as Squarespace or Webflow is the better answer. Naming them is not a partnership or a reseller relationship. Custom website development earns its place when content is structured, integrations are real, or a brand system has to hold across many pages.
The hard part is logic, not pages
A scheduling engine, a pricing model or a data pipeline with a thin web front is a software problem, so start at Custom Software Development. If it has to be installed from an app store, start at Mobile Application Development. Scoping goes wrong when a software problem is bought as a website.
Questions
Questions about websites & web apps
Should we redesign or rebuild our website?
A website redesign changes how the site looks; a rebuild changes how it works underneath, from the content model to the templates and integrations. If the trouble is editing, structure or links to other systems, new paint on the same templates leaves it in place. If the structure works and only the look has dated, a redesign may be enough.
Can our team edit the site without a developer?
That is what a content model and a CMS are for, and scope can include both. Your team could then change the words and pages without booking developer time. New kinds of page, or changes to the templates, would still be developer work. Copywriting itself is not included.
Do we own the domain and the hosting account?
Yes. The domain, the hosting account, the code and the repository are yours, in your name. Who handles updates and editing access afterward (your team, us, or a split) would be agreed in writing before launch. Ongoing server operations are not part of this service.
Will the site rank in Google?
A crawlable build is intended; no ranking is promised. Scope can cover what keeps the build out of a crawler's way: server-rendered markup, clean URLs, titles, metadata, sitemaps and correct redirects. Ranking for particular search terms is search marketing work, such as keyword research, content production and link building, which this service does not include.
Does your website design and development cover web applications?
Scope can include web applications: logged-in areas, customer portals, quoting tools and document uploads. They can sit on the same domain as your site and connect to the systems that hold the data. If the hard part is logic rather than pages, such as a pricing model or a scheduling engine, start at Custom Software Development.
